  1. VYTAR

The ship hung in the air, hovering silently above the house.

“Are you sure this is the one?” Vytar asked, pacing around the large open room of the front cockpit. They had been traveling for so long, searching for a signal for so many years. Could it be they’d finally found it here? On Earth of all places?

“I’m just double checking the numbers.” Zylon sat in front of the huge computer terminal, his fingers moving over buttons in a blur. Vytar looked out of the ship, into the window of the small countryside cottage. Inside he saw the figure of a woman moving about. His eyes followed her every moment. If this was really the right place, if the calculations had been correct and the soul seeker had really worked, the woman he was staring at was possibly the Vialea, his destined mate. Excitement stirred in his chest and he felt nerves consume him.

The ship terminal made a beeping noise from behind and Zylon stood up. “I think - I think this is her. There’s no way to be sure. We’ll have to get a closer look - obviously.” He put a hand on his brother’s shoulder, his eyes burning with happiness. “After all this time Vytar, have we found her?”

Vytar turned away from Zylon and looked out the window at the human female again. They had waited so long to find her, now that it was here Vytar didn’t know how to feel.

Maybe I should just get this over with. He thought.

“I can’t wait any longer Zylon. I have to know.” Vytar stormed past Zylon towards the back of the ship.

“Vytar where are you going?!” Zylon shouted, chasing after him.

“I need to know. I need to get closer.”

Zylon caught up to him and grabbed his brother by the arm. Vytar spun around, his eyes burning in fury.

“What? What is it you want?! Why do you stop me so unnecessarily when we are so close?!” Vytar’s broad chest lifted up and down quickly, his breathing fast and shallow. Zylon released him from his grasp, trying to calm his brother.

“I’m sorry brother, but you know we cannot go down yet. It is safer for us to go down after their sun has set and we can take her in the dark. That will be the easiest way for all of us.”

“I can’t wait that long!” Vytar growled, and tore away from Zylon once more. Zylon ran after Vytar, but he was simply too fast.

Vytar ran to the exit shaft, wrapped his large hands around the cool metal rungs and leapt up the tunnel.

“If we go now brother we risk jeopardizing the whole mission!” Zylon shouted from below him in the shaft.

Vytar punched the release button at the top of the ship, the exit hatch above him opened like a mechanical eye and he jumped out and onto the top of the ship. He stood on the surface for a moment, the cool earth breeze taking some of the heat off of his skin.

  “Vytar please…”

Vytar turned to see Zylon had followed him up to the top of the ship.

“Curses little brother can’t you just let me be!”

Zylon stepped forward, closing the gap between him and his brother.

“Please brother general, we cannot act now, it would risk everything!”

“I have told you to leave me be Zylon and that is an order!” The word hung heavy and they both stood there for a moment. Only the wind and the faint hum of the ship’s engines masked the silence.

“Please Vytar, you know I cannot ignore direct orders, but I cannot allow you to jeopardize this mission.”

Vytar looked at his little brother’s bright green eyes and saw the pain within them. As General, Vytar was the highest ranking soldier in the Zeistian army and all other soldiers had to bow to his command. His little brother Zylon was one of his direct lieutenants and technically had to obey every order that Vytar gave him, but in his heart Vytar knew Zylon was right. It was too risky trying to claim the female human now.

Zylon fell to his knees and swung a heavy fist down against the ship. “Gods! I just want this journey to be over…” They’d waited so long to find her, he’d waited so long. The people needed their Vialea. He needed… No.

He stopped his mind from going any further. Vytar sighed. “I have waited so long.”

“As have we all brother.” Zylon knelt beside Vytar and placed a hand on his back. “But you know what is at stake here. We cannot afford any element of risk.”

Zylon was right. Vytar knew he was right. Zylon had always been the brains of the family. The one who could keep a level head and truly see through emotion, calculating all of his decisions on highly rational level.

“I know.” Vytar said standing up. “You’re right, you’re always right little brother.” He turned to face the cottage that lay just below them and looked through the window. “We have waited so long to find the Vialea and now that we are finally here - I feel as if I cannot hold myself back. I just want to get this over with.”

“I understand brother. And I hope that I too will feel that one day when I find my own Vialea. All I ask of you is a couple more hours, then we can act.”

Vytar moved to the edge of the ship’s top to get a closer look at the woman inside the house. She was small, so much smaller than he was, with long golden hair coming out her head and green eyes that sparkled like emeralds.

That had to be the worst part of it so far. Just how beautiful she was. Vytar had adjusted long ago to the idea of pledging himself to someone for the rest of his life. If it was good for his people then he would do it. But he hadn’t expected her to be…so beautiful, if anything that would make all of this harder for him.

The relationship between the Zeist and humanity was fine on the surface, but below that Vytar knew the truth. He knew what the humans had done, he knew what they were doing. It was a good thing his people didn’t know, or they’d be calling for an all out attack on earth.

To think that his destined soul mate and the Vialea would be a human? That defied belief beyond all conception for Vytar, but the prophecy did state the Vialea would be someone who could unite the galaxy.

Vytar stared at the human female. His eyes traced over her round hips, full breasts and thick legs. Vytar felt his whole body growing hot with desire. However he felt about humanity, however he felt about pledging himself to a Vialea, he could not deny that there was something unusually beautiful about this woman. You could go into the house now, you could mate her. You could force her to be the Vialea. He thought. She certainly was beautiful enough for Vytar to entertain the idea of being with her sexually. The idea enticed him and his whole being leaned towards her with want.

“You must wait brother.” Zylon grabbed his shoulder firmly.

Vytar sighed and realized that Zylon must have been reading his thoughts. Vytar should have noticed, but he must have been too preoccupied with staring at the human female.

“No.” Vytar turned his shoulder away. “I cannot wait any longer. I’m going to take her now.”

Suddenly there was a noise from down below.

“Vytar quiet! There is someone outside the house.”

They both crawled towards the front of the ship and peered over the edge cautiously. Below them another human female walked up the path and knocked on the front door of the cottage.

“Another female Vytar.” Zylon whispered to his brother. “We have no choice now but to wait, truly it is not safe.” Vytar hated to admit it but Zylon was right again. They would have to wait until night time now.

The woman stood by the door, waiting for it to open. She turned around and examined the sky. Vytar did not worry about her being able to see the ship, the camouflage they used was highly sophisticated and rendered them practically invisible to the human eye. Perhaps if the woman really stra
ined she would notice some currents of air moving in a particular fashion in front of the ship, but it would look no stranger than a curtain of air rising from a hot tarmac road.

The door opened and Vytar could finally see their target. Calculations or not he needed no numbers to know that she was truly and utterly beautiful.

I have never known beauty like this before.

Vytar crawled as close to the edge of the ship as he possibly could.

The human female who opened the door started speaking.

“Em!” She cried out and threw her arms around the other human.

  “Elle!” The other returned.

“Oh it’s so lovely to see you. Do come inside we can have a cup of tea.”

“That sounds wonderful Elle. Have you seen the sunset tonight? It’s really quite something.”

The visiting female turned to the side and Elle stepped out onto the porch to look into the sky. Elle looked up towards the sky, her eyes staring right into Vytar’s.

My god. Vytar thought. She can see us!

Elle’s eyes locked onto his own for a moment, then flicked past him at the sky behind.

“Oh yes,” He heard her say, “It’s really quite splendid.” Something about her expression and her pallor had paled however.

Vytar linked with his brother telepathically.

“Zylon, is there any chance the humans could see us here?”

Zylon looked at his brother and replied wordlessly.

“None at all, the humans do not have ability to see through our camouflage technology.” Vytar looked back down at the cottage porch.

“Come Em, let’s get inside and get a spot of tea, it’s starting to get a bit cold out here.” Em walked inside and the female called ‘Elle’ stopped for a moment to look into the sky once more. Vytar’s heart started thumping in his chest, she was looking right at him.

Curses I am sure she can see me! Vytar thought.

Elle craned her head forward and squinted, as if she was trying to get a better look at Vytar. She shook her head, walked inside and closed the door. Vytar took a deep breath and stood up.

“Something is wrong.” Vytar stood and paced about the top of the ship. “She could definitely see me then. Or almost see me. That shouldn’t be possible.”

“It’s simply not possible Vytar. Perhaps you were just imagining it.”

“Perhaps.” Vytar said. But he did not believe it.

He walked back down to the entrance tunnel at the top of the ship’s roof, looked back at the cottage once more and reluctantly climbed down back into the ship’s interior. Zylon followed after him, the mechanical eyed whirring as it closed overhead above them.

Vytar walked into the cockpit and sat in his chair, his eyes focused on the cottage in front of them. Why did that other female have to turn up? Curse her and curse all of this bad luck. If she hadn’t appeared then he would have been able to jump forward and take the Vialea now. He didn’t care that she was human, he didn’t care one bit at all. The idea might had bothered him at first when they set sail on this journey all those months ago. When Zylon had turned on the seeker for the first time and it returned the coordinates for Earth’s quadrant.

If this earthling…Elle. If this Elle was really the Vialea then that also meant she was the person Vytar was supposed to be with for the rest of his life.

A pulsing sensation throbbed from the center of his brain, it was the sensation that told him someone was looking to communicate with him. He focused inward and sensed that it was Nuvir, his youngest brother, whom was back on the mother ship.

  “General Vytar.”

“Brother Nuvir. How can I help you?”

“I trust all has gone well with your excursion so far?”

“Yes, we have found the target, we are just waiting until night fall for us to take her.”

“That is brilliant news Vytar. Are you happy?”

Vytar thought about it but only felt anxious at the moment. “Is there a purpose to your message Nuvir?”

“As a matter of fact yes. We’ve detected some Ranagath activity not far from us.”

  Vytar sat up.

“Ranagath? But that’s impossible! They’ve not been in this quadrant since-”

“I know, since we kicked them out the last time. But it seems they are back. They must have followed us here. It’s just a couple of scout ships at the moment, but it’s definitely them.”

Vytar stood up. The idea that Ranagath had returned to earth unsettled him deeply, especially so now that he knew the potential Vialea lived here.

“Have all units ready for deployment just in case, remain on high alert. We can’t have the Ranagath jeopardizing our mission to rescue the Vialea.”

  “Yes sir.”

Nuvir’s presence faded away and then the conversation was over. He approached Zylon who was working at his terminal.

“I trust you felt that message from Nuvir?”

“Yes. It is extremely worrying. Why would they return now, of all times?”

“I am not sure.” Vytar answered truthfully. “But make sure you are ready to leave at a moment’s notice. We cannot be too careful.”

“What about the Vialea?” Zylon asked.

  “What about her?”

“Should we hold off on our collection if it is too dangerous to proceed?”

“No.” Vytar’s voice was low and powerful. “We proceed as normal and collect the Vialea no matter what happens.”

Zylon looked up at his brother nervously.

  “Is that clear?”

  “Yes Vytar.”

  “Good.”

Vytar returned to the front of the ship and looked out the window over the cottage once more. Yes. He thought to himself. There is not a chance that I am giving you up now.

Ranagath be damned, there was no way he would leave the potential Vialea behind with creatures like that.

Through the window Vytar could see Elle sitting at a table, talking with her companion.

I’ll be seeing you very soon Elle. Don’t you worry about that.

  2. ELLE

Elle closed the door and went inside.

“Just make your way up Em, I’ll be up in a second, I need to check my mail.”

Elle waited until she was sure Emma was gone and then sighed, collapsing against the door. What was that she had seen out there?

Were those…blue eyes she had seen floating in the sky? She wanted to open the door and look again, but another part of her told her that would be a bad idea. She must have been hallucinating it surely. Why would there have been a pair of eyes just floating above her in the sky? Still, regardless of whether they were there or not she had felt something odd when she saw…whatever it was. She felt a longing inside of her greater than anything she had ever known before.

It was probably just a trick of the light. She told her self. It had been a pretty spectacular sunset, maybe she had stared at the sun too long and it had affected her vision somehow.

Elle decided she had probably just imagined it. I’m going to put it out of my mind for the rest of the night. She walked up the stairs and into the kitchen to join Emma.

“No mail then?” Emma was stood next to a steaming kettle, waiting for it to finish boiling.

“What? Oh, err - no. Nothing!” Elle stumbled, forgetting the lie she’d just told about her mail. Emma met this with a disbelieving ‘Hm’ sound and then the kettle clicked off.

Elle knew her cousin, she knew that she could see through her lies like they were paper. She didn’t feel like explaining what she had seen in the sky however. Or what she thought she had seen.

“I’m sorry, it’s just been a long day. What with Jane moving out and all. I just felt like I could use a bit of company. I think being alone in the house is sending me a bit crazy.” Emma grabbed two teabags from the cupboard, popped them into cups and filled them with steaming water from the kettle.

“It’s only been one day Elle!” Emma laughed back at her. “I know it’s hard seeing your sister move out, but come on love. Give yourself a few days at least before you start going mental!”

Elle laughed along with her. She was right. That was what she loved about Emma, she always had an ability to bring her spirits back up again and make her feel good. That wasn’t why she’d invited her here tonight though.
